Taking the 32 chapters of the Diamond Sutra as the theme of his creation, Lee Sun-Don stages an insightful presentation of his works created in the past, present, and future simultaneously, as a way to challenge and depict an important ancient riddle in the Diamond Sutra, "Mind is without distinction of time in the past, present and future". At the exhibition site, "The Diamond Sutra - Mind Diagram" (original drafts) Lee created in 2007 was displayed to represent the "past"; the impromptu painting "The Diamond Sutra - 3D Canvas Sculpture" Lee creates on-site during the exhibition represents the "present"; video recording of the viewer's statement represents the "future". Lee Sun-Don employs his creative approach guiding the viewers and together navigates through space and time. What is worth mentioning is the base painting on the 32 pieces of "The Diamond Sutra - 3D Canvas Sculpture". On each of these 32 canvases printed a passage or a sentence of the Diamond Sutra written by the most notable Chinese calligrapher Wang Xizhi, known as the Sage of Calligraphy. All these canvas will be made into 3D canvas sculpture with each displaying shapes and colours of its own to represent the essence of each chapter of the Diamond Sutra. Lee's innovative conception on art turns the "canvas" itself into the contemporary artwork characterised by simplicity. |
