Prof. Lee Composes Music, “The Great Master • 20” Globally renowned, Professor Lee Sun-Don, the first Asian artist ever to participate with a solo exhibition of oil painting in the Venice Biennale (2009), never conceals his intention behind his creation of Totemic Energy Oil Painting – i.e., to glorify and disseminate the Buddha's teaching. Inheriting from the Second Patriarch of Buddhist Forshang, Bodhisattva Yuan-Dao, Prof. Lee has expressed his gratitude and reminiscence toward his Mentor via a series of paintings, such as “Image • My Master”. Now in the 20th year after Bodhisattva Yuan-Dao had entered nirvana, Prof. Lee composed his memory into melody to honor his Great Master., which will be performed by Pro Arte Orchestra led by Prof. Chia-Hong Drapal Liao on November 1st at National Concert Hall, Taipei. |

Prof. Lee's involvement in music was much earlier than painting. With passions for classical music, he learned violin and cello, but had been afraid of playing piano. Buddhist cultivation, however, transformed his fear of piano, and moreover, elicited his talents for this musical instrument. He began to compose with piano – and his composition is for one and for one only. He once said, “What is romantic? To compose music for one and only for one, that is what I mean by being romantic.” And the one and only Prof. Lee contributes his music to is the 2nd Patriarch of Buddhist Forshang, Bodhisattva Yuan-Dao. This year, on the 20th year after the 2nd Patriarch has left the world, Prof. Lee composed in piano “The Great Master • 20” to honor his Mentor. This composition has been arranged into a violin concerto by Prof. Yen Pey-Wen, and will be performed by Pro Arte Orchestra conducted by Prof. Chia-Hong Drapal Liao, with Ashley Tong as the violin soloist. This is the 5th edition of the concert “In Memory of a Great Patriarch” as part of Pro Arte Orchestra's charity event. This year's program includes Violin Concerto No. 2 entitled “The Great Master • 20”; Beethoven's Symphony No. 5 in C minor, op. 67; movie soundtracks from Breakfast at Tiffany's, Hawaii Five-O, and Love Story. Among others, Prof. Chia-Hong Drapal Liao is excellently skilled and well experienced both in solo and group performance, also an outstanding conductor – he had drawn marvelous acclaim from The Washington Post and Mr. M. Ruedenauer, an authoritative music critic for the Vienna Festival. Prof. Lee Sun-Don and Yen Pey-Wen, who work together for this year's “The Great Master • 20,” had been nominated for the 18th Golden Melody Awards in the category of “Traditional and Artistic Music” as best composers with their work “In Memory of a Great Patriarch II.” Tickets are almost sold out upon the news about this year's concert being released. A commemorative CD of this concert will be released afterwards, with Prof. Lee's painting of “Image • My Master I” as the CD cover. The image of this painting has also appeared on the street banners and other promotional materials of the concert. This is indeed a beautiful crossover of painting and music. |
