Dinosaur Egg Fossils were Moved from the General Museum into the Museum of Fine Arts Lee Sun-Don’s series works "The World in Hand", through a pair of Buddha hands, allowing the ancient lives from hundreds of millions of years ago to transform into artworks... The Art Revolution Taipei (ART) is to hold its VIP night on May 7th. This year there are occasional visitors from the international fossil Alliance, paying a special visit to appreciate the art director Lee Sun-Don’s new series “The World in Hand.” “They are here to check if I have done any graffiti on the fossils." Lee Sun-Don said with a smile. This year is the fifth year of ART. In addition to the selection of exhibits for the Exposition, Lee Sun-Don has launched an astounding new creation every year. This year his woks also become a collector’s topic. "Every fossil that you see here is genuine." "Some people think that the colors on the ammonites are painted on. No, that is the natural color. We have signed a purchase agreement, promising not to pollute the fossils." Lee Sun-Don went on to explain, the spiritual cultivation groups take fossils as the common heritage of mankind, which can be traded, but not destroyed. If there is need for international exhibitions, these fossils will be sent for display. Fossils should stay in the museums, but Lee Sun-Don got those into art gallery. It is expected that 20 or more pieces will be completed, and now there are still several that are unfinished yet. Colorful ammonites were the first group of works to participate in a preview. Two were already collected. The fossil itself is very expensive, and is even more expensive once made into an artwork. President of Kelti Group Chen Wugang just bought one of those. The biggest piece is the Manmoth’s ivory of two meters long, "very long, very, very heavy, very beautiful ...... I do not intent to sell." Lee Sun-Don said. In this year's ART there will be a wide variety of fossils, such as trilobites, elephant’s teeth, dinosaur egg, sinistral shell, the coelacanth, etc. Trilobites are also classified into early and late stages. The early stage trilobites have compound eyes and those of late stage evolved to have thorns. It is the most amazing that those fossil items are kept in a very good condition that the hundreds of thorns of trilobite are clear. How would one think of taking the fossils for creation? Fossil are expensive and heavy. Would one not worry to break the fossils in the creative process? During the interview Lee Sun-Don first reveal generously the construction method. He said, of course, he cannot directly get the real thing to try. Once he got the real thing, he first commissioned some company to make a model of the same weight, same shape as the real thing. There are four companies in the world that are very professional. Two are in Asia. "We are very lucky, to find the one that is in Taiwan. This company is very professional and the British Museum will find them to make models." Very Special Material Beyond Human History Then Lee continues to design thick soft Buddha hands, which are made of bronze, able to carry the weight of fossils, but also have to be also elegant, and perfectly match the fossils. "There are earthquakes in Taiwan; we cannot allow it to happen that after a little shake a dinosaur egg is rolling on the ground." Lee Sun-Don was talking with hand gestures imitating the rolling movement. Lee stressed that such an awkward thing must not happen. If the models were tried on and do not the match the hands, then the bronze statue must be made again. Fossils are real and the one and only; and the bronze statue made to match the fossil is also the one and only; when both match, Lee began painting totem, which is not the same for each piece and therefore is also the one and only. Lee Sun-Don quickly finished explaining the construction method, but the whole process has gone through four or five years. "Four years ago, I started collecting fossils." "I wanted to do something that is beyond human limits ......" said Lee Sun-Don, I then thought of things that were there before man appeared, that were beyond humans in time. "When the fossils were placed in front of my eyes, it really hard to describe that feeling." said Lee Sun-Don. Some fossils have gone through 4 billion years of waiting. The Buddhist sutra says that a kalpa is 16.8 million years, and 400 million years is 25 kalpas. "If they have no causation with me, they will definitely not have any contact with my six senses." Draw Totem to Contrast Bronze Statue Hold the Breath to Focus during Creation Lee Sun-Don chose the magnificent Totem to ornate and to contrast the Bronze statue. Once the drawing begins, Lee realized that something was not right. "A man over 50 years old, no longer to have good eye sight," Lee has not been drawing such fine totems for a long period of time. "You know what? Drawing acrylic on the bronze statue will only show a hint of color," each stroke has to be repeated at least four or five times before the color shows. Some may even need to be repeated a dozen times. When drawing such a fine line, your hand can not shake at all, not even a bit. When painting, really, I have to "hold the breath to focus", I can not breathe. "Ha, a real test for my powers of concentration." Lee Sun-Don said. To let fossils live again through art, Lee Sun-Don alone is probably the first person. The employee of X-Power Gallery said that a lot of people already came to visit. Even Chairman of the Industrial Bank of Taiwan Luo Jinming personally came to visit the artist, and asked whether the artist can also design a pair of Buddha hands with totems painted on the statue.
