Master and Pupils Joint Exhibition by Lee Sun-Don & Ma Sing Ling A Legend of the Art World- Modern Oriental Picasso Professor Lee Sun-Don has won 154 international art honors and awards of painting, photography, sculpture and installation art since 2007. He was Asia’s first artist in 100 years to hold a solo oil painting exhibition at the 53rd Venice Biennale. International art authority Pro. Achille Bonito Oliva praised him as an “Ultra Avant-garde artist” in his critique of Lee Sun-Don. He is also reputed as the “Modern Oriental Picasso” by Il Tempo Roma (Rome Times Newspaper). Beginning from Lee Sun-Don's Totemic Energy Oil Painting, which amazed UCLA scientists and professors, his creation has repeatedly challenged our understanding of art. Using western paint to create inherently Eastern feelings, this in turn of takes Western oil painting into a deeper and more profound spiritual realm within the depth of oriental culture. Lee Sun-Don continues to challenge his own limits. He has created 148 series of painting, photography, statue and installation art and has developed numerous unique techniques. He once said, “My greatest pleasure is to break through and challenge what has never been done.” Besides his yearning to challenge the form of creation, Lee Sun-Don's creative aspects transcend time and space giving antique art new life. This is why the CEO of world's leading automobile manufacturer, DiMora was attracted by his concept of creation, and invited Professor Lee to collaborate. Crossover Collaboration Creates a New Era of Art Professor Lee's achievement is both academic and creative. After being invited to UCLA to present a keynote lecture and perform improvisational art on stage, his artwork was then collected by institutions such as the National Art Museum of Ukraine (Kiev, Ukraine), Asian Art Galleries at Ringling Museum (Sarasota, Florida, USA), and the Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art (Cornell University, New York, USA). Professor Lee was invited to serve as a visiting professor at the Russian Academy of Arts (Russia), as well as a visiting professor at the School of Fine Arts at Peking University. In addition to the pursuit of his own artistic self-transcendence, Lee Sun-Don has also left his imprints in the latest fashion, lifestyle living and other industries. Asia’s first global boutique presence in Los Angeles’ Beverly Hills (Rodeo Drive, Beverly Hills) international boutique GP DEVA Group, invited Lee Sun-Don to serve as their artistic director. Taiwan’s pioneer kitchen design company, ODDO GROUP invited Lee Sun-Don to design and give kitchen design world an art makeover. The world’s first hand-built million dollar sport car automobile manufacturer invited Lee to collaborate in a project to fuse classical with contemporary art and create beauty in traveling. Heroines in the Art Field, Excellent Students are Always Lead by Great Teachers Studying under the tutelage of Professor Lee Sun-Don and rapidly rising in international art circles, the highly anticipated Asian woman artist trio “Ma Sing Ling”, comprised of Taiwan’s emerging artists: MANIHOO, Singway, and Ling Ling, began their joint creation in 2011. Their joint creation works are calm yet amplified, and fully challenges the free fluidity of paint and color. The unpredictable flow of paint captures the rhythm of nature unfolding a splendid strength. A prominent collector praised, “As stunning as if seeing Zhang Daquian's splashed ink art!” Their first creation was selected to exhibit in the world-class art contest the Royal West of England Academy, which amazed the world with their first attempt. Followed with more affirmations from prestigious awards organizations, such as The Royal Institute of Oil Painters (ROI- Paris, France), Annual International Contemporary Artists Exhibition, and Midland Arts Association 35th Annual Spring Juried Art Exhibition (US) along with other world-class art juried competitions. In 2013, the exhibition in Hong Kong, Art With Me , Master and Pupils Joint Exhibition by Lee Sun-Don and Ma Sing Ling had created quite an international sensation. Many VIP guests attended the exhibition, including Tang Wan Ying (Mimi Tang), the Asia Pacific president of Kerin Group, albeit her busy schedule. She not only attested the artist's talent, but also praised the artwork as being "Incredibly powerful"! Elite attendees that evening included collectors and VIPs from Shanghai, Shenzhen, Hainan and Taiwan who attended the festivities in Hong Kong for the chance to see the artists' latest works. An Artwork Tour of Significant Works by Lee-Sun Don and Ma Sing Ling In this exhibition Professor Lee uses Wonderful Clouds series to portray landscapes that are perceived with spiritual eyes that see into and beyond the scene itself, rather than merely its physical formation. With clouds over mountains as its motif, Wonderful Clouds features the various transformations of nature. It manifests not only the essence of the myriad landscapes; it captures also the spirit and free exertion of the essence. To diversify the multifaceted manifestations, the artist occasionally adds colors to tone the painting – for example, using green, blue and purple to highlight the vitality of exuberant forests. With his uniquely developed painting skills, the artist allows the artwork to speak itself its inner changeability, its agility, and its spiritual ambiance and conception of Zen wisdom. Another trademark of this series is the temple, in which the artist has been dwelling. While painting, the artist always asks himself: If I live in this painting, where should the temple be located? The location of the temple is thereby the keystone, similar to the “set stones” (or Joseki) in the Go game. It sets up the hinge, structure, and scope of the entire painting – specifically, as the eyes of a dragon, it makes the artist’s aspired “Pure Land” come alive. 3-Abstract-D / Black & White series is a complete contrast with the Wonderful Clouds series. Lee uses only a single color to paint on his self created “Canvas-on-Canvas” method, which utilizes cloth to create 3-dimensional space. The canvas is used as sculpture material, then according to artist’s notion of composition, he then stitches a layer of canvas onto the actual canvas, to form a semi-three-dimensional sense of relief that can be rendered as three-dimensional layering. The artist combines "Canvas-on-Canvas" and "Leaving Blank" techniques to express minimalism on a higher level and explore even deeper connotations. Paintings of 3-Abstract-D / Black & White series are created along four axes: thick/thin (in terms of paint density), substantial/insubstantial (in terms of brushwork), running, and structure. Although simple in composition and color, these four axes work collaboratively with the totemic canvas embellishment, which in turn brings out the dimensionality and depths of the artwork, allowing for multiple readings and diverse ways of seeing. The biggest challenge is that every brushstroke here runs by the artist’s natural sway, and how it would show in the end; how the viewers’ perceptions are completely unknown. It is through the mutual inspiration of the artist, beholder and canvas that brings life to the artwork. Furthermore, 3-Abstract-D / Black and Color series is the extension of 3-Abstract-D/Black & White series, which adopts the black color as the base color and painted on top with an additional color. Composition of these two series is simple, yet reflects bright and natural visual dimensions. They can be viewed from any direction, each of which would induce emotional echoes from different viewers. Inspired from their mentor’s creative ideas, artist trio Ma Sing Ling presents Form of Unity/Saint Lotus series. The three artists have a deep understanding of Buddhism Zen and through their artistic expression display the utmost purity and holiness of the lotus flower. In Buddhism, the lotus flower is regarded as the most scared and noble of all flowers, and the artists believe the portrayal of the lotus as a precious gift for the viewers. Inspired from classical poetry, the Water Chants series is a transformation and expression of the artists’ state of mind to illustrates the water scenes described in Chinese classical poetry and lyrics. Although this series was originally literature-inspired, the paintings became an incredible expression of the artists’ minds, aspirations, and pursuits of a sense of transcendentalism and transformation. These painting entitled Form of Unity/Water Chants To Wander Freely Around and Beyond Mountains and Rivers combine Chinese sketch techniques with Western oil in a creative way. The golden blocks, on the one hand, highlight the distinctions between spaces; while on the other, reveal a style of cubism, with various spaces juxtaposed on one plane. |
